Wings 2 Roots: Kids Birding Workshop Series

Wednesday, August 19th | 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Planting Fields Arboretum

1395 Planting Fields Road Oyster Bay, NY 11771

W2R-Kids-Workshop

Grab your binoculars and your curiosity! Wings 2 Roots is a nature series for young explorers, set on the beautiful grounds at Planting Fields. Each session blends hands-on classroom activities with guided nature walks, connecting kids to the birds, plants, and ecosystems right in their own backyard. Along the way, naturalists will uncover what birds truly need to thrive, explore the forces that threaten their habitats, and discover the real ways they can make a difference.

July 8 | When Habitats Get Hurt

Every bird needs the same things to survive: food, water, shelter, and space. But what happens when those needs go unmet? In this session of Wings 2 Roots, young naturalists will start by building a picture of what a healthy bird habitat looks like, then investigate two of its quietest threats: invasive plants that crowd out the species birds depend on, and pollutants that silently harm food and water sources. We'll move from the classroom to the arboretum grounds, where we can spot these threats and healthy habitats side by side.

August 19 | Habitat Heroes

Some birds have come back from the edge of extinction because people chose to pay attention and act. In this session of Wings 2 Roots, young conservationists will hear those stories, then head outside for a Gratitude Walk through the arboretum to observe how this living landscape supports the birds that call it home. Back in the classroom, every participant will make a personal Habitat Hero Pledge: one real thing they can do for birds in their everyday life. Everyone goes home with a native plant seedling and earns their Junior Habitat Steward certificate.
