What birds will I see?
As our tours are on the water, expect to see a diverse array of marine birds. Summertime birding offers osprey, cormorants, gulls, herons and egrets, belted kingfishers, and more!
As the weather gets cooler and winter waterfowl arrives, we observe plenty of scoters, loons, mergansers, long-tailed ducks, and other colder-weather birds.
Can I bring snacks and refreshments?
Guests are welcome to bring snacks and light meals aboard. We encourage everyone to bring a reusable water bottle, and we also have drinking water available on board if needed.
To help preserve our historic vessels, we kindly ask that you avoid bringing foods or beverages that may stain. Examples include strawberries, blueberries, cranberry juice, red sports drinks, and similar items.
As this is an educational sailing experience, alcohol is not permitted aboard. We also ask that guests refrain from consuming alcohol before their expedition.
Our vessels are historic wooden boats, and preserving them for future generations is an important part of our mission. We appreciate your help in treating them with care and respect during your expedition. Thank you for helping us maintain a safe, enjoyable, and educational experience for all.
What is your cancellation policy?
While we do our best to bird in light rain or shine, CIBS reserves the right to cancel birding expeditions in the case of inclement weather, mechanical problems, or other unforeseen circumstances. In such cases, your payment will be returned.
If you are unable to attend the expedition you signed up for, please email cibs@shfsailing.org to release your spot for another participant.
If you cancel 14 days before your expedition, your full payment will be refunded. If you cancel 7-13 days prior to your expedition, you will receive a 50% refund. No refund will be given if you cancel within 7 days of sailing time.
Where do expeditions depart?
Summertime birding expeditions depart from the Oyster Bay Marine Center (OBMC) located at 5 Bay Ave Oyster Bay, NY 11771.
Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time to allow enough time for parking and walking down to the docks. Upon arrival, meet us at the picnic tables on the OBMC dock for check-in. Since our birding vessels are moored in the bay, we will take a launch boat to board them.
